In 2014, Listen embarked on an unprecedented mission to help Microsoft create a sonic identity and define their sound across their products, platforms, and brand.
Beginning with a comprehensive survey, we analyzed sounds across virtually all Microsoft brands: Xbox, Windows, Office, Skype, etc., as well as the sounds of partners and competitors.
After conducting more than 30 interviews and analyzing more than 2,000 videos, we identified core principles to inform Microsoft’s sound.
We designed Microsoft’s sound to be humanizing and organic; intelligent and unconventional; connected and universal; productive and empowering.
These principles informed a unified sonic approach spanning products and communications.
