Muse are known for their theatrical live shows and fascination with technology. To celebrate the release of their 2019 album, Simulation Theory, they were looking for something particularly immersive.
We worked closely with the band and Microsoft to create three custom virtual reality games — each featuring a different song from the album, and expanding on the world created in their music videos.
The idea was to create a connected world around Simulation Theory, that fans could experience in multiple ways.
Windows Mixed Reality powers the games, which are housed in retro-styled cabinet consoles. It was important to the band to carry this retro-futuristic aesthetic throughout the games, as ‘80s influences from Back to the Future to Blade Runner populate their music videos.
The games went on tour with Muse as part of the “Enhanced Experience” ticket, giving fans around the world the chance to feel like they’re IN a Muse music video.
Frontman Matt Bellamy said of the project, “I think this is the best we’ve ever done in terms of creating this world around everything from the videos, the music, the live show, and now obviously the games as well. It’s the first time we’ve really been this involved in so many different types of mediums and managed to get them all to feel connected.”
